Enugu Law Officers Begin 7-Day Warning Strike Over Salary Cuts, Unpaid Allowances

Law officers in Enugu State, under the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), have begun a seven-day warning strike over alleged salary cuts, unpaid allowances and poor working conditions.

The strike started at 12 midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, and has affected official legal activities in courts, government ministries, departments, agencies and correctional centres across the state.

The association said the situation worsened in 2020, when their salaries were allegedly reduced and their hazard allowances withdrawn.

LOAN also said some officers have had to use their personal money to carry out official government duties because of the lack of allowances.

The association listed six major demands:

    1. Harmonisation of law officers’ salaries with those of magistrates.

    1. Payment of Bar Practicing Fees.

    1. Payment of Annual Bar Conference fees.

    1. Restoration and payment of transportation allowance, including arrears.

    1. Restoration and payment of hazard allowance, including arrears.

    1. Restoration and payment of wardrobe allowance, including arrears.

During the strike, members were directed to suspend official legal duties, including attending court, visiting correctional centres and representing the government at police stations and other law enforcement agencies.

LOAN said the strike is not only about allowances but also about fair treatment, professional dignity and the welfare of law officers.

The association urged the Enugu State Government to address its demands and resolve the issues that have continued for several years.
