Nnamdi Kanu Rejects Any Negotiation Without Biafra Independence Referendum

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has insisted that he will not accept any negotiation that does not include a referendum on Biafra's independence.

In an address to the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) at its annual convention in Georgia, United States, held from October 9 to 11, 2026, Kanu said the people of Biafra must be allowed to decide their political future through a free vote.

He rejected proposals involving political appointments, restructuring, or another conference, insisting that a referendum remains his main demand.

β€œReferendum, or the unilateral pursuit of Biafran sovereignty. There is no middle ground,” Kanu declared.

He also called on AVID and other pro-Biafra groups to continue campaigning for his release and that of other detained Biafrans.

Kanu alleged that the Nigerian government interfered in IPOB's leadership and maintained that unity and discipline were necessary for the movement to continue its struggle.

He further reiterated his claim that he was unlawfully transferred from Kenya to Nigeria and criticised the handling of his court case.

Kanu said his goal remained the pursuit of an independent Biafra, which he described as a homeland where his people could live under their own laws.

He urged supporters at home and abroad to continue advocating for the right of Biafrans to determine their future, insisting that no political agreement would be acceptable without a referendum on Biafra's independence.
